These are common concerns when people receive their blood test results. The moment ESR is flagged as abnormal, it is easy to associate it with serious illness.
A high ESR deserves attention, but it should not be used to make a diagnosis on its own.
What Is ESR?
ESR stands for Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, also known as the sed rate. It measures how far red blood cells settle in a tall, thin tube over approximately one hour.
Under normal conditions, red blood cells settle relatively slowly. During inflammatory states, changes in certain blood proteins may cause red blood cells to aggregate into larger clusters. Because these clusters are heavier, they may settle more quickly.
